We spotted this beautiful bird at Country Garden Greenhouse near Monte Lake, BC a couple summers ago. Its bright, almost tropical colouring stood out immediately, and I ran for my camera before it disappeared. The bird was so vivid that we joked about whether it could possibly be a parrot—clearly not something you’d expect to find in the wilds of BC. Our cousin, a biologist, identified it right away as a Western Tanager. This was a memorable moment, as the farm is a very special place to me and all of my partner’s family
