In May 2024, I spent a week in Canmore preparing for abdominal surgery. I went jogging each day to stay steady and present, and on three of those mornings I spotted a blue jay along the trail. I couldn’t be sure it was the same bird, only that it appeared unexpectedly and never when I returned with my camera. On my last day in town, just before the surgery, the blue jay settled long enough for me to take a single photo—a small, welcome moment of clarity in an uncertain week.
