This past year we have hosted three day retreats at Spiritwood Retreat in Priddis, AB. When I arrived for one of the retreats, this Western Tiger Swallowtail was feeding on clusters of small, vivid yellow blossoms on a leafy bush at the back of the parking area. I was captivated by its beauty and took quite a lot of time before going up the driveway to the event, photographing this butterfly. The scene in this image captures the delicate interaction between the butterfly and the blossoms, highlighting both its size and its graceful balance as it hovers at the flowers. I loved watching it barely holding on to the flowers as it ate. When I told the owner about my time photographing the large yellow butterfly, she was very moved. A close friend had recently passed, and she had seen many of these butterflies and this felt symbolic for her.
