Sign of Spring in Calgary

from $80.00

The Red-winged Blackbird is a sign of spring for many Calgarians. As spring begins to emerge, I like to go to the wetland ponds at Pearce Estate Park to listen to their unique song. So calming. This photo is actually taken on the banks of the Bow River near Mackenzie Meadows golf course. The song of the Red-winged Blackbird is one of the most distinctive. It has been described by some as a “conk-la-ree!” call, a ringing, gurgling song that echoes around marshes and ponds. The posture of the bird in this photograph — leaning slightly forward with wings partly spread and tail fanned — is characteristic of his territorial display, a behaviour males perform soon after they arrive in early spring to claim nesting areas before the females return. This image represents the lively energy of springtime in Calgary’s wetlands.
